Dan Heywood – Quality gardening in South Manchester

About Me

Dan Heywood

I am a lifelong admirer of nature and the outdoors and take inspiration from the natural world around me.

Gardening has been a hobby for as long as I can remember.  At some point that hobby got out of hand and my career as a gardener was born!

I studied photographic and visual studies at Norwich UEA, learning skills in composition and visual structure which I apply when designing and working on gardens.

After university I worked for The Broads Authority in Norfolk as an assistant countryside ranger, working with the local community and  helping to conserve and maintain the national park. I gained a number of land-based qualifications in my time at The Broads.

On moving to Brighton I became part of the innovative Magpie Recycling Co-op, becoming manager of the garden waste department.

During my time at Magpie I studied horticulture at Plumpton College which gave me the confidence to then set up my first gardening business.
I then went on to study garden design at Plumpton College.

Since 2009 I have run successful gardening businesses in both Brighton and Norwich and now in South Manchester, creating, maintaining and getting the most out of a wide variety of gardens of all different shapes and sizes.

And gardening still remains my main hobby when I'm not at work!

Testimonials

Dan has been doing our garden for a number of years . We have a new build so we had to start from scratch . Having very little knowledge of plants ourselves Dan explained the options and designed the garden and layout for us and it has subsequently flourished . Dan's knowledge is exceptional and we would highly recommend him.

Quite simply, Dan does what he says he will do, when he says he will do it. He is reliable and the quality of his work and attention to detail is first class.

Dan has helped us transform the garden over the past few years. We enjoy his thoughtful approach to gardening, working with its natural features, ensuring that our garden is wildlife friendly and attractive at all times of year. Dan can turn his hand to all aspects of gardening, from tree work to pond care, looking after borders, trimming hedges and shrubs, and the vegetable patch. He's friendly and reliable, full of good advice and a pleasure to work with.

When we moved in to our new house the garden was a small tricky shaped mud patch – very daunting. Our brief to Dan was for a child friendly but visually interesting garden with height and interest to break up the hard lines of the surrounding fences and buildings.
Probably the most notable aspect of the garden is the excellent planting scheme that Dan created for us. Dan expertly selected plants that give height, softness, movement and colour.

The garden is now over 3 years old and the planting has matured really well, with Dan’s guidance on maintenance being invaluable. Thank you!

Dan has been both an inspirational gardener and a real pleasure to work with – his knowledge and understanding of plants combined with focus and hard work has meant that my garden has flourished. I have particularly appreciated how Dan has made suggestions and alterations to planting and designs that have helped the garden hold together whilst at the same time allowing for the freedom and movement that had been so lacking up until now.

It is rare in our experience to find a professional who is very knowledgeable, reliable and an absolute pleasure to have visit us. Dan is such a man. He is considered and takes great pride in his work. Over 7 years we have really valued his work and the friendly chats every time we see him. Highly recommend.
